What is this practice?
The clocks have no hands. Draw the short and long hands to show the time written below.
Why this level
Step: Step 3 · Write & Read・Around age 6 and up (guide)
This runs the opposite way to reading a clock. Reading needs only the short hand, but drawing means deciding to put the long hand on 12 as well. Only times on the hour appear, so the long hand is on 12 every time. The dial is 44.4mm, the same as the reading sheet.
Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.
The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.
For grown-ups
- Starting with the short hand avoids confusion.
- Point out that the two hands are different lengths — the long one is minutes.
- A crooked line is fine as long as it points at the right number.
