What is this practice?
The pictures repeat in a fixed order. Choose which of the three on the right belongs in the box. 2 problems.
Why this level
Step: Step 3 · Write & Read・Around age 6 and up (guide)
A cycle of 4 repeats. At least two and a half cycles are shown, so the rule is unambiguous. No numbers or letters are involved, yet finding a rule and predicting what follows is where arithmetic begins. Exactly one of the three choices is correct.
Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.
The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.
For grown-ups
- Pointing from the start and reading aloud helps.
- Saying “cat, dog, cat, dog… what next?” makes the rule audible.
- If it is hard, cover one cycle with a hand.
