What is this practice?

The pictures overlap and fill the sheet. Count each of the 3 kinds and write the number in the box below.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & Read・Around age 6 and up (guide)

Unlike a row of separate pictures, these overlap, so the ones behind show only part of themselves. The aim is counting a partly hidden picture as one whole. With a row you can count by eye; with overlap you have to mark each one or you count it twice. There are 18 in total.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Marking each one as it is counted prevents double counting.
  • Working from one edge reduces missed items.
  • One kind at a time is fine.
