What is this practice?

The same picture appears in different colours, 20 in all. Circle every one of the green umbrellas. There are 6.

Why this level

Step: Step 2 · Trace・Around ages 4–5 (guide)

All 20 pictures have the same shape, so colour is the only cue and they cannot be picked out by form. Sorting sheets divide by kind (animals, vehicles); this one divides within a single kind by colour. Each is tilted differently, so position cannot be memorised either. There are 6 correct answers.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Point to one of the green umbrellas first and say “find the ones the same colour as this”.
  • They may be circled in any order, as they are found.
  • When all are circled, try counting how many there were.
