What is this practice?

The same six pictures are sorted by a different rule in each row: color only, shape only, then both.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & ReadAround age 6 and up (guide)

The rules are not written in words — the example at the left of each row is the rule. Color rules use a colored dot; shape rules use a greyed-out picture, because a colored one would read as “this color too”. Letting go of the rule that just worked and switching to another view is the heart of this sheet. The order changes each row, so “the same place as before” does not work.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Once ① is done, point out that ② changes the way of looking.
  • ③ needs both conditions — there is only one.
  • If they get it wrong, ask which rule they were using.
