What is this practice?
Count the apples on the two plates and write the numbers in the boxes. Three ways of splitting five.
Why this level
Step: Step 2 · Trace・Around ages 4–5 (guide)
It contains no addition signs at all. Reading symbols would turn it into an arithmetic sheet, so “3 and 2 make 5” is shown with pictures and boxes only. The answers are digits, so the sheet is identical in Japanese, Chinese and English. The same split never appears twice, and no split leaves a plate empty.
Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.
The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.
For grown-ups
- Pointing at each one while counting helps.
- Say it out loud once written: “three and two make five”.
- Noticing that five can be split in several ways is enough.
