What is this practice?

Splitting 8 into two parts. There are 7 ways and all of them are here.

Why this level

Step: Grade 1 · Add & Subtract・Around ages 6–7, Grade 1 (guide)

The Taiwanese Grade 1 unit on composing and decomposing numbers, which comes before addition and subtraction. All 7 ways are on the sheet, so nothing is missed. The pairs that make ten are the ones reused later for carrying.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Counters or fingers make the splitting concrete.
  • Asking "four and how many make ten?" aloud speeds it up.
  • Repeating the sheet for ten pays off later.
