What is this practice?

Kagami Mochi, drawn large enough to fill the sheet. Two round rice cakes are stacked with a mandarin on top. Pine sprays spread out to the left and right; they are drawn with many fine needles and already look busy. Several white papers are tucked into the stand below, all of them blank.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & ReadAround age 6 and up (guide)

The drawing measures 176×222mm. The line weight varies from place to place and the fine detail is kept as it is. The lines are dark enough that a photocopy does not drop them. There is a lot to color, so finishing it over several sittings is fine.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Leaving the two rice cakes white and coloring only the mandarin makes it read as New Year.
  • Crayons or colored pencils both work.
  • The colors do not have to match real life.
  • There is no need to color all of it.
