What is this practice?

A ten-frame is five on top and five below. Look at how many are there and write how many more make ten. 9 problems.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & Read・Around age 6 and up (guide)

Unlike scattered pictures, the frame shows the group of five, so seven reads as "five and two" and nine as "one away from ten". That is exactly what makes carrying easy later.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Placing real counters on the frame helps.
  • Say "five and how many" out loud.
  • Move on to the "how many more to ten" sheet.
