What is this practice?

The 5 romaji spellings NA NI NU NE NO. On each row, trace two faint spellings then write in the two empty boxes.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & ReadAround age 6 and up (guide)

The spellings follow Hepburn romanization (shi, chi, tsu, fu). The boxes are 39.5mm, the same size as on the hiragana sheets. Capitals are shaped differently from small letters, so they are not mixed onto one sheet. After a child can write the small letters is soon enough.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Read them as sound units, not as letter names (“ay”, “bee”).
  • There is no need to fill all four boxes.
  • Placing the matching hiragana sheet alongside makes the pairing easier to see.
