What is this practice?

A whole sheet for just the katakana “ハ” (ha). There are 4 rows; on each, trace two faint characters then write two more. 16 boxes in all.

Why this level

Step: Step 3 · Write & ReadAround age 6 and up (guide)

Katakana usually comes after hiragana. It has more straight lines and corners, so the hand moves differently from the curves of hiragana. “ハ” takes 2 strokes. The boxes are 39.5mm with 2 faint models per row — the same size as the hiragana sheets, so the two forms of the same sound sit side by side.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Please don’t correct the shape. Inside the box is enough.
  • Comparing with the hiragana for the same sound makes the difference in shape easier to notice.
  • If a pencil is still hard to hold, a thick colored pencil or crayon is fine.
