What is this practice?

The animals in each square match the number, and every number gets a different animal — 210 in all. Print A4 in landscape.

Why this level

Step: Step 1 · Grip・Around ages 2–3 (guide)

A dot version of this chart also exists; this one uses animals, a different one for each number, because 20 squares of the same picture read as a repeating pattern rather than something to look at. The pictures wrap every five, so ten reads as two rows and twenty as four. Larger numbers get simpler animal shapes, since their pictures are drawn smaller.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Set the printer to landscape.
  • Pointing and counting aloud is what makes it stick.
  • Saying the animal names while counting adds the words too.
