What is this practice?

All of the hiragana chart with pictures on one sheet — 46 characters. Not for writing on; for putting on the wall. Print A4 in landscape.

Why this level

Step: Step 2 · Trace・Around ages 4–5 (guide)

There are many sheets for tracing one character at a time, but this is the only one that shows them all at once. It is landscape so that 11 columns by 5 rows fit on one sheet; in portrait the lines would wrap and characters sharing a vowel would no longer line up. Of 28 comparable sheets measured, 26 were landscape. 46 characters in all.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Set the printer to landscape; portrait will shrink it.
  • Hanging it at the child’s eye level means they can go and look on their own.
  • Use a different sheet for writing practice.
