What is this practice?

Different pictures are mixed across a 4×4 grid. Count only the picture shown at the top left and write the number in the box at the top right.

Why this level

Step: Step 1 · GripAround ages 2–3 (guide)

Unlike sheets where one kind is lined up in a row, here the target must be picked out of a mix. The child holds the target in mind while scanning, so counting and visual search are practised together. The grid is 4×4 and the answer is 6. The squares let a finger mark where counting has reached.

Ages are only a guide. Children of the same age can do different things, so each card also shows what a child can already do.

The sheet title and the note for grown-ups are printed in English. Words inside the activity itself stay in Japanese or Traditional Chinese.

For grown-ups

  • Working left to right, one row at a time, reduces missed items.
  • Marking each one found with a pencil while counting is fine.
  • When finished, try counting how many of the other pictures there are too.
